STRESSSSSS !!!

Stress is an emotional and physical reaction to change. Everyone has stress. Stress can be positive and give you energy or it can be unhealthy and cause health problems. Stress for short periods may not affect you but stress over time can cause or make some illnesses worse, such as heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, irritable bowel syndrome, asthma or arthritis.
Some people have described a difference between good and bad stress, labeling good stress, eustress, and bad stress, distress. But either stress, either kind of stress, challenges us. It requires that we have the resources to rise to meet that challenge, that we have the automatic and natural way of producing the fight or flight hormones -- those hormones that are released -- epinephrine, norepinephrine, adrenaline -- all are there to provide us with a burst of energy, to rise to meet the challenges we need to meet. And so, good stress on some level is anything -- I think -- that feels positive to us but still requires that we have that kind of energy to be able to -- that burst of energy -- to be able to rise to meet it
1.Have you ever got stress? If yes, what kind is it?
2. Who or what made you feel stressful?
3. How did you felt when you get stress?
4. What did you do at that time?
5.How long did you cope with your stress?
6.Is there anyono helf you or you overcome the stress alone?
7.Could you share some good ways to prevent and cope with stress?

DISABLED CHILDREN

Today, many disabled children are found in Vietnam's remote country side where access to medical care is limited. They must endure unwanted attention when going out in public, being the subject of stares and pointing fingers. Even though every child has a different experience of handicap and their own unique story to tell, they all share a common thing, a life of suffering and misery, of being an outcast.

However, they also share a common hope of being able to overcome their disabilities and participate in life as fully and joyfully as other children do. I met and talked to some of these children, and learnt that underneath the disability, there is a normal child struggling to break free.

Below is some information of disable children in Vietnam:

- There are about 1.2 million disabled children in the country (including moving deformities, mental deformities, dumb, blind…). Children-victims of Agent Orange counts about 200,000.
- Most of the children’s families are in difficult economic conditions so that most time their parents spend for earning money, they rarely spend time to rehabilitate their children or pick their children up the functional rehabilitation centers. Besides, there are many families that locate far about 30km to centers and it is not convenient for them to take their children to centers

- The living conditions of disabled people in central Da Nang city and surrounding areas, which are considered hot spots of dioxin, are expected to be improved by US-funded projects.
- According to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, aid donated for these projects will come from a 3-million-USD budget approved by the US Congress in 2007 for dioxin treatment and health activities in Vietnam .
- The US Embassy in Vietnam says each project will receive a maximum of 500,000 USD per year.

- Lack of text books in Braille, and shortage of specialist teachers was putting children with disabilities at a disadvantage. The problem was more acute at high school level because the teaching load was lighter in primary schools. School managers had a part to play in the integration of handicapped children into the school system.
- A training manual for pupils with disabilities was introduced at several special primary schools in Ha Noi on March 12.
- The curriculum, jointly compiled by the German Development Service (DED) and the Hue University , provides special methods to educate children, especially those with intellectual disabilities.
- The five-volume book is designed for teachers at primary schools and schools for disabled children nationwide. It aims to help handicapped pupils gain better access to lessons.

2. Did you come there? When?
3. How do you feel when you meet them?
4. What do you think of disadvantages that disabled children might have in life?
5. Do you know how much each centre pays for one child every month? Can you guess?
6. Is it enough for them to live?
7. What do you think of training program for those children? Is it good enough? What is the gap now?
8. Do you think disabled children/people can find a job after graduation easily? Why?
9. If not, what can government do to support for them?
10. What job do you think it is suitable for disabled children?

Entrance Exam For University: Should We Drop It Next Year?

Every year, the government has to organize 2 big exams out of so many ones: high school graduation and university entrance exam. These exams are just about 10 wks away each other. In order to do it, we have to spend a lot of time for preparation and money to organize. Below are some facts:
It costs us time to organize many phases for testing.
o Entrance exam of university this year will be held in 2 phases as normal. The first phase will run between 4-5 Jul for those who registered for group A and second phase will fall between 9-10 Jul for group B,C,D. The college phase will follow by 16-17 Jul
We spend so many resources for preparation:
o Logistics: Up to now, there are more than 1,5mil applicants for university entrance exam while college entrance one just received 620 000 applicants which made it account for 25% compared to university exam. With huge amount of applicants, it could give more pressure for university and college committee to find testing place which is bigger enough to handle that number of applicant
o Money: Moreover, we have to re-spend money again for renting room for testing while applicants should pay again ( 60 000VND) for these tests. In short, applicants will pay 12.6 billions in total. With cost increase, there is another proposal that each applicant should pay 100 000 which could help university/college committee be able to avoid financially loose. That means total spending could be higher than 12.6 bil.
o Committees have to hire many teacher supervisors during the test to ensure the effectiveness of this exam. Plus, salary for teachers to give marks for exams would be another burden to spend
o Although with good preparation, most of the time, student attendance is much lower than registered. One of the obvious reasons is that students apply for two or more universities and they finally choose one to attend. This will cause wasteful because we have to hire everything : place/teacher, etc…
Above are some numbers. So let’s discuss:
- Do you agree with above ideas?
- If yes, do you see any other disadvantages?
- If no, why?
- Do you think we should combine university entrance exam and high school graduation into one? Why?
- What difficulty/favour will you have if we do with that direction?
- How can we fix those difficulties?
- Is there any other way that we can make this more efficient?

DOCTOR SHORTAGE IN COMMUNE HEALTH CLINIC

In recent years, there are many patients died on way to or after entered hospital, because they haven’t been giving first emergency aid at their local area.
According to the result of social investigation at northern provinces, all the physicians who have just graduated from Medical universities don’t want to work for commune health clinic. They try to look for job in province hospitals or District’s health centers because of following reasons:
- At the province hospital or district’s health center, there are a lot of patients who are transfer from many other areas, so physicians can absolutely apply their knowledge to treat patients. Besides they also learn more experinces from specialist doctors’s treatment methods which are really important for new physicians.
- Morever there are many advanced diagnostic equipments to support treatment methods.
- The main reason caused physicians not to work for commune health clinic is low pay. At present the monthly salary of a pharmacist at hospitals and clinics is just over one million dong. The extra pay for a night on duty is just VND 10,000. All the income items aren’t even enough for their life.
Nowadays, almost doctors build their private treatment clinic at home for earning more money. Some physicians change their jobs because they can’t find out job in district’s health centers or province hospitals.
Although local auhtorities have many aid policies such as: providing accomodation, supporting transportation’s charge … but they couldn’t attract doctor work for commune health station.
Now this social issue is paid attention from every social levels and local authorities. We are listening to your opinions.
Questions:
1. Have you ever come to your commune health station ?
2. What do you think of this station’s quality?
3. According to you, it is necessary to maintain commune health station or not? Why? What benefit do we will have if we maintain it?
4. Have you got any suggestions to the Government in order to improve the situation which is mentioned above ?./.

FOREIGN WORKER IN VIET NAM

- The issue of worker’s jobs is always paid special attention to by National Assembly as well as local authority levels. In recent years, The Government has promulgated many policies in order to attract foreign and internal enterprises to do business in Viet nam such as : exempting or reducing land rented budget, supporting infrastracture builds
- In reality, the number of companies operating in Viet Nam is increasing day by day, therefore situation of unemployment has been solved. In some provinces like Dong Nai or Binh Duong, there is a shortage of labourers, especially in garment and leather shoe companies.
- However the number of foreign workers who are working for foreign as well as internal companies is increasing. Most foreign workers come from developing countries as Thailand, Malaysia, India … besides there are experts or highly skilled workers in many aspects.
- Nowadays, The Government is considering this issue. If we don’t control and have any regulations on foreign workers in Viet Nam, Viet Nam people’s job finding chance will be more difficult. Moreover a large sum of money is tranferred to other countries because most foreign workers have higher salary than Vietnamese labourers’.
- On contrary, if we limit the number of foreigner working for companies, Vietnamese labourers will not have more chances to learn experience as well as techniques from foreigners.
- In order to solve this matter, The Government encourages well-known universities as well as vocational training centers in the world to open new branchs in Viet Nam with the purpose of training experts and highly skilled workers./.
Questions:
1. Are there any foreign worker in your companies?
2. How do you evaluate foreign worker’s capacity?
3. What do you learn from them ?
4. Have you got any suggestions to The Government about situation of foreign workers

The Mass Media:How Influencing It Is In Shaping People's Ideas?

The development of the mass media has had great influence on our lives. We have come to depend on them for information and entertainment. In doing so, we let them affect on important aspects of our life.

First of all, mass media are regarded as the best ways to broaden our mind. For example, just by staying at home watching TV, surfing the net, we can know everything happening all over the world. In addition, we also learn how to take care of ourselves, cook good dishes for our family, educate our children, and behave with other people… throughout many programs on TV, radio or Internet.

Secondly, mass media including television, newspaper, radio is very useful for us to look for jobs. Seeking through the Situations Vacant column in the newspaper give us a general look of the jobs we are going to apply for and therefore, we will know whether we like these jobs or not. According to the latest survey, there are billions of people finding their jobs through newspaper, radio and Internet every year.
Besides, the development of the mass media, especially television also help us to fasten the relationship with our family members .For instance, after a hard-working day, every member of a family gathers at the living room so as to watch TV, chat, and discuss. I think that it's very comfortable and happy, particularly in this modern life.

On the other side of the coin, the mass media still have some harmful effects. It means that nowadays, there are more and more films shown on TV and Internet. And some of them are not good for us, especially for our children. Influenced by what they watched, our children can imitate and fall for temptations or bad ways.

Last but not least, some news in some newspapers is unreliable because few journalists have a tendency to exaggerate hot news such as scandals of famous singers, film starts…

To sum up, it can't be denied that the mass media have great influence in shaping people's ideas. In my view point, the mass media which are good or bad depend on our awareness and purpose.

§ good, bad, interesting or same content?
§ Is it suitable for Vietnamese culture?

7. Can you name other advantages and disadvantages of the mass media?
Nowadays, young people tend to imitate singers, film stars to have their hair cut, make up, and dress. What do you think about that?
8. As you know, some newspaper did exaggerate some news in order to hopefully drive sales. What do you think about that? What impact would it cause?

SCHOOL QUITTING OF CHILDREN

To implement the agreement between VietNam Government and Unicef organization on protecting and taking care of children, in recent years, the Ministry of Education and Training has promulgated many social policies in order to socialize education, and ensure children in ages of 6 to 10 going to school.
- The state has many concrete solutions such as: building solid schools, supporting textbook and not getting school’s fee for the children who are living in remote areas …. As a result, the rate of children going to school has increased in recent years.
- However, the rate of children’s school quitting in large cities like Ho Chi Minh city is increasing. In order to understand this problem clearly, local authority carried out the social investigation in suburban area such as Củ Chi, Cần Giờ districts.
- The results of the investigation indicate that almost children left school are living in poor families at the moment. Their parents have not enough money to support children’s learning. In some special cases, the children have to work in order to earn money for their families. The concrete jobs of children are to sell lottery tickets, to clean bowls in restaurants, or to clean cars …
- On the other hand, there are a lot of poor families immigrating to large cities to look for jobs. The parents haven’t got stable jobs and often change accommodation. This reason badly influences to their children’s learning.
- In general, there are many objectives or subjective causes to lead to children’s school quitting. Nowadays local authority has made more effort to build night affection classes, to find out stable jobs for parents, to encourage children to go to school ….
- Besides, city’s leaders are listening to and receiving your recommendations in order to solve completely the matters which are mentioned above./.

c. What are the impacts of this issue on society?
4. Have you got any suggestions to the local authorities to solve this issue?

MOM – I LOVE YOU

Did all of you know that last Sunday is mother’s day? What do you think people usually do on that day? In Vietnam, I think we don’t have mother’s day actually. However, as affected by western culture, some of us now start to celebrate mother’s day. People usually buy gifts or flowers and then send them with wishes to their beloved moms.
But it doesn’t mean that we just love and show our caring for our moms on that day only. You can do it anytime. Sometimes, it doesn’t need to be a gift or roses. Your simple caring such as talking with them can make our moms happy.
Talking about that, sometimes I feel myself guilty. Sometimes, we treat others nicely at work, at school because we don’t want to un-please our co-workers or our friends. And what do we treat our family, our mom? When we come home, we easily get mad with our mom, our family. Is it fair? Honestly, I was in that situation. And I figured out that it is so unfair. Your family, your mom is the ones who love you most. They are the ones who are by your sides when you are down, the ones who bring you up every time you make mistake. I did make that mistake. But mom did forgive me as always.
I still remember that my family has run through the hard time. It almost went bankruptcy. In order to save my family, she had to work really hard and did a very hard job. Sometimes because of being so tired and worn out, she cried and wanted to give up. But she knew that crying could not help it better. Then she stopped crying, stood up and moved forward. That not only moved her forward but also moved my family forward as well. Just imagine that everything is like a devastating mess in front of you, and you are about on the edge, front of you is deep abyss, only strong will could help you going through of that.
Now everything is getting better. But I can not forget those days. My mom not only teaches me how to be a good person, but also how to deal with hard time in life. Thank mom for all of that.
That is my mom. So why don’t you tell me about your mom?
Questions:
1. How old is she?
2. What does she do?
3. Where was she born? Where is she living now?
4. What reasons that make you love your mom?
5. Do you have any memory between you and your mom that you remember most?
6. Have you ever made any mistake that sadden your mom? What is it?
7. What did you do after that?
8. Does she have anything that you don’t like? What is that?
9. Do you think what she expects/wishes from you?
10. If you can do one thing for your mom, what would you do?
11. Do you know what she worries most now? Why is that?

VACATION AND TRAVEL

It is very interesting if you have a nice vacation. That means you can go a place which you like. Everybody usually spends their vacation with their friends or family. What do you do on your vacation? You will go fishing or stay at home to relax or make a travel? Can you share it with us?. For me, I decided to spend my vacation with my friends at BuuLong tourist area. There is an interesting camping with many games.
On a vacation, everybody always has a plan to travel. Travel is very popular nowadays. You can travel by air ,by car, or by train, etc...For some people, there is nothing like travel by air, it is more comfortable, more convenient and of course far quicker than others. It is actually cheaper than going by train and ship, considering what you save in hotel charges or sleeping carriages on the train and in meals, taxis.
For others, their favorite transportation method is by car. Travel by car can give you more personal experience, by which you can drive yourself as slowly or as fast as you like, stop whenever and wherever you like. Then, of course you can see so much more of the country than you do in a plane.
However, there are people who are interested in travel by train. By train, you seem to have all : fastness, comfort, and pleasure. You can go faster than by car and see more than by plane. By car, you have to pay attention of driving and so are unable to see the scenary landscape along your travel. However, if you travel by train, you have a spendid view of the whole countryside from the comfortable seat of a railway carriage.
So you can choose the method of travel that suits your taste to give you most of pleasure.

How To Stay Healthy

Health is a very precious thing that any of us wants to have. That is the reason why health always comes at first when people make the wishes for their beloveds. Without health, you can not work well. Without health, you can not do what you want. Without health, you don’t feel fresh and healthy to enjoy life.
Just remember how it feels when you are sick. It is such a terrible feeling. Your headache almost blows the brain up. Your body hurts. You keep throwing up whenever you eat some things. And I am sure that at that time, you don’t need money at all. You don’t need anything else except health.

So health is important. But what should we do to get it? There are some popular ways. The most popular way is to do exercise, at least 3 times a week to burn the calories and keep yourself in good shape. Jogging is one of recommended exercises for its simplicity and effectiveness. Or you should have healthy menus for your daily meals. That means less/enough fat and more vegetables. I say less fat, not less meat. J Another way to have a good health is to keep your mind fresh and carefree. Some people are so stressful at work or school which makes them always nervous and unhappy. You should put them aside when you get home then you can enjoy life and stay healthy.

I guess that you have your own way to keep yourself healthy. Please share with us.
1. How are you today? Do you enjoy Sunday morning?
2. What did you have for breakfast today? Do you think it is enough energy for you to discuss topic this morning? J
3. Do you think health is the most important?
a. If yes, how important it is to you?
b. If no, please tell us why? And what is the most important thing to you?
4. Do you think you are healthy now? Why?
5. What do you do to keep you healthy?

Internship – A Step Into Career

As students, before graduation, it is required for all of us to take 2- month internship at least in a company, research institute or laboratory to get an insight of the job that you are about to work in future. It also helps us to explore and understand deeper about how things we learnt in university are applied in reality. This is also a chance for you to collect all information that might be useful for your thesis that will be coming right after internship. Generally, it is a milestone step that connects your studying in school and your future work.

However, you might face with some difficulties during this internship. Firstly, you need to adjust your schedule to fit with working hours which normally start from 7am till 5pm. To work at 7 am would be a terrible thing for those who normally have classes in the afternoon. And you will have to get used to with working 8 hours continuously with a short lunch break instead of your leisure time before.

Secondly, you need to adapt with new culture where relations are getting more complicated. You need to build your new network/relationship. And you will get used to that you will have a boss/coach and other colleagues.

Thirdly, another difficulty that you might face is how you can get coach from others and learn as much as possible during the internship. Some of my friends complained that they didn’t have many things to do and learn during this time. To me, it depends on many factors. Your coach is possibly too busy to coach you. Or he/she is not willing to coach. You are not well preferred in that group due to your poor communication.

So those are just some difficulties that you can face during the internship. But some of my friends still enjoy it very much. How about you guys?

1. What is your major?
· Where did you have the internship?
· When was that?
· How long did it last? Do you want to extend or shorten it? Why?
· How did you get that internship? From your school? Friends?
· How many days a week do you have to go?
2. Did you get paid during the internship? What do you think if they don’t pay you for the internship? Why?
3. How was the internship? What did you learn?
4. Did you receive much coaching during that time? Why? What happened? What did you do?
5. Did you have any interesting things during that time? What are they?
6. Did you have any difficulty? What happened?
7. Do you have any advice for students?

Prices Storm - How To Deal With That?

Many things have changed drastically when global oil price keeps soaring up. It now has hit a record high up to 115$/ barrel. The steepy increase of oil price has led to price increase for everything. That means you have to pay more for every stuff that you buy. Unfortunately, your salary increase didn’t catch up with it. If you want to save money as you did, you need to cut down other unnecessary spendings.
Many newspapers had some articles of this impact on daily life. According to them, workers in industrial zone are among ones who bear the most impacted of it. From their research, most of worker’s meals now are just vegetables and tofu and eggs. Meat has disappeared and became something expensive to them.

That is sad but true. Some dating couples do find it difficult as well. Some decided to go out less than usual. Or they will explore a new coffee shop with cheaper price. That also means less time for movie.

FORGIVENESS

Do you think that you can please all people around you? Are you sure that you never made any mistake that hurt others or never regret yourself? If you answer “Yes”, you are not human beings!
Each of us has a lot of relations and we have to keep them well in daily life. This depends on your skills and how you value the importance and effects of good relationship. No one is perfect so we sometimes have mistakes (innocently) which hurt others and hurt yourself alike. Everything seems be too serious and terrible if sometimes we do not forgive. Forgiveness can help us improve ourselves. After being forgiven, we think of what wrong we did and try to do the better things or avoid the same bad ones so we feel comfortable and motivated to make this life became easily and peacefully. When we forgive others, we have peace in mind because we have just given them chances to make a new start.
This is easy to say but so hard to do. It’s up to the situation and the way people think about it.

REAL SITUATION:
There was a couple, they loved each other and they got married. When their daughter was one year old, the father left. He went to America, had another family and forgot his ex-wife and daughter. The mother kept the sorrow inside and had to work very hard to bring up her kid. Eighteen year later he came back Vietnam and found his child. He really wanted to help her to study oversea, in America but the young girl did not want to leave her mom. She said she hated him a lot because of his fault to her mother but her mom encouraged her to go to have a bright future.
In your opinion should the young girl forgive her father to go to study oversea? Why?
If the girl decides to go, does she forgive the father or not?

CINEMA IN VIETNAM

In the past, Vietnam cinema has witnessed its golden age in early of 1990s when people had to get into long queue-up line to get the ticket for their favourite films. At that time, there was actually an idolization wave in their fans. People considered actors and actresses as stars in their hearts. Posters of them were sticked numerously on the wall. Their faces appeared massively on newspaper and their personal information was a hot and juicy news for readers.
However, things totally changed in late 1995. The glamour just suddenly disappeared like it never existed. After that, all cinemas just fell into a long sleep like as fairy tales.
In 2003, GAI NHAY made a big boom which helped Vietnam movies turning to another page. Following its buzz, a chain of made-in Vietnam movies hit the cinema in last few years which drew audiences back to cinema.
Capturing that demand, many investors have pumped their money into building cinema complex in which Galaxy is a pioneer for example. It has set up a new way of movie entertainment : high-quality cinema with air conditioner, surrounding-sound system and modern accommodation with better and professional service. Megastar is a fresh player but it has made its identity to audience with many cinema complexes across Vietnam and its service.
In Vietnam, Tet is a hot season for movies. Nu Hon Than Chet was a blockbuster in Tet 2008.
Today we will discuss more about Vietnamese movie and cinema. We would like to hear your ideas of it.

Questions:

1/ Have you recently gone to the cinema? If yes, what cinema? And what movie?
2/ What do you think of that movie?
3/ How about the service and infrastructure of that cinema?
Is there any difference between now and in the past?
4/ What do you think about the price of drink in cinema?
5/ What do you think of ticket price? Is it high for you?
6/ Do you think who usually go to the cinema? Why?
7/ Some people say they would rent/buy a DVD and watch movie at home. It is cheap and you can watch movie as soon as it is shown in US. What do you think of it?
8/ Did you watch Tet movies in cinema in 2008? What movies?
9/ Which one did you like best? Tell us why?
10/ Did you have any difficulty for booking the ticket?

What are your plans in 2008?

Everyone has own aims and targets and we usually have plans to get them. Plans can be big or small ones and this depends on the extent of targets of everybody. It is not easy at all to have suitable plans which can help us find the efficient and logical ways to have exactly what we want. The problem is what the secret of good planning is. According to a Managing Director of a Traveling company in USA, the most important thing of a good planning is to know exactly what it is that we want to achieve, and define it, and define by when we want to achieve it and with that information, then we can set a deadline and identify the tasks that are necessary to achieve that goal, basically get on with them to a timetable.
There are some things which are clearly out of our control. Plans sometimes go wrong and what should we do if this happens? In my opinion, we can do ourselves to accept that, not worry too much about that. When things change sometimes not for the better, we should be calm to step back, reassess the situation and redefine the goals. This might even mean changing the end goal but I think knowing exactly what it is that we want to achieve is always the important thing.
New year is coming and of course we have a lot plans for this year or our life alike so why don’t you tell us your goals and your plans to reach those goals? Hope some ideas from the presentation above can help you find it easier in making suitable and smart plans.
And now it’s time for us to discuss this topic and these are some questions:

1/ Did you have any target last year?
2/ Have you achieved that? If yes, what have you done to hit that? If not, why? What are the reasons?
3/ Have you got any target or goal in your life? What are they? (in your career, study, love, ect.)
4/ What do you often do to get your goals?
- Do you usually make plans to get your targets or just think that” what will be will be”?
- After having plans, what do you do to put your plans into practice?
5/ Could you tell us your goals this year and your plans to achieve them?
- What exactly will you do to achieve the goals that you have set up?
6/ In your opinion, if your plans go wrong and this might corrupt your long-term project which you put your heart in, what would you do?
7/ “ Plans are nothing; planning is everything”- Dwight D Eisenhower (1890-1969), 34th President of the United States.
- Do you agree with above sentence? Why or why not?

How to Succeed in Life
by Andrew Carnegie
From The Pittsburg Bulletin, 19 December 1903. Reprinted from the New York Tribune.
Everybody wants to preach to the young, and tell them to be good and they will be happy. I shall not enter far upon that field, but confine myself to presenting from a business man's standpoint of view, a few rules, which, I believe, lie at the root of business success.

First--Never enter a bar-room. Do not drink liquor as a beverage. I will not paint the evil of drunkenness, or the moral crime; but I suggest to you that it is low and common to enter a bar-room, unworthy of any self-respecting man, and sure to fasten upon you a taint which will operate to your disadvantage in life, whether you ever become a drunkard or not.

Second--I wish young men would not use tobacco--not that it is morally wrong, except in so far as it is used in excess and injures health, which the medical faculty declares it does. But the use of tobacco requires young men to withdraw themselves from the society of women to indulge the habit. I think the absence of women from any assembly tends to lower the tone of that assembly. The habit of smoking tends to carry young men into the society of men whom it is not desirable that they should choose as their intimate associates. The practice of chewing tobacco was once common. Now it is considered offensive. I believe the race is soon to take another step forward, and that the coming man is to consider smoking as offensive as chewing was formally considered. As it is practically abandoned now, so I believe smoking will be.

Third--Having entered upon work, continue in that line of work. Fight it out on that line (except in extreme cases), for it matters little what avenue a young man finds first. Success can be attained in any branch of human labor. There is always room at the top in every pursuit. Concentrate all your thought and energy upon the performance of your duties. Put all your eggs into one basket and then watch that basket, do not scatter your shot. The man who is director in a half dozen railroads and three or four manufacturing companies, or who tries at one and the same time to work a farm, a factory, a line of street cars, a political party and a store, rarely amounts to much. He may be concerned in the management of more than one business enterprise, but they should all be of the one kind, which he understands. The great successes of life are made by concentration.

Fourth--Do not think a man has done his full duty when he has performed the work assigned him. A man will never rise if he does only this. Promotion comes from exceptional work. A man must discover where his employer's interests can be served beyond the range of the special work allotted to him; and whenever he sees his employer's interests suffer, or wherever the latter's interests can be promoted, tell him so. Differ from your employers upon what you think his mistakes. You will never make much of a success if you do not learn the needs and opportunities of your own branch much better than your employer can possibly do. You have been told to "obey orders if you break owners." Do no such foolish thing. If your employer starts upon a course which you think will prove injurious, tell him so, protest, give your reasons, and stand to them unless convinced you are wrong. It is the young man who does this, that capital wants for a partner or for a son-in-law.

Fifth--Whatever your wages are, save a little. Live within your means. The heads of stores, farms, banks, lawyers' offices, physicians' offices, insurance companies, mills and factories are not seeking capital; they are seeking brains and business habits. The man who saves a little from his income has given the surest indication of the qualities which every employer is seeking for.

Sixth--Never speculate. Never buy or sell grain or stocks upon a margin. If you have savings, invest them in solid securities, lands or property. The man who gambles upon the exchanges is in the condition of the man who gambles at the gaming table. He rarely, if ever, makes a permanent success. His judgment goes; his faculties are snapped; and his end, as a rule, is nervous prostration after an unworthy and useless life.

Seventh--If you ever enter business for yourself, never indorse for others. It is dishonest. All your resources and all your credit are the sacred property of the men who have trusted you; and until you have surplus cash and owe no man, it is dishonest to give your name as an indorser to others. Give the cash you can spare, if you wish, to help a friend. Your name is too sacred to give.
Do not make riches, but usefulness, your first aim; and let your chief pride be that your daily occupation is in the line of progress and development; that your work, in whatever capacity it may be, is useful work, honestly conducted, and as such ennobling to your life.

To sum up, do not drink, do not smoke, do not indorse, do not speculate. Concentrate, perform more than your prescribed duties; be strictly honest in word and deed. And may all who read these words be just as happy and prosperous and long lived as I wish them all to be. And let this great fact always cheer them: It is impossible for any one to be cheated out of an honorable career unless he cheats himself.

STUDY CORNER:
Some idoms:
1. (to be) up in the air = not yet determined; uncertain.
ex: It might rain later, so our plans for the picnic are still up in the air.
2. (to be) down in the dumps = to feel sad, be depressed
ex: It’s not surprising that Lisa’s down in the dumps. Susan, the cat she had for 20 year, just died.
3. (to) hang out = to spend time (often doing nothing)
ex: Ted spent all of last summer hanging out by his girlfriend’s pool.
4. take it easy = relax, don’t worry.
Ex: you lost your key? Take it easy, I’m sure you’ll find it.
5. (to be) crazy about = to like very much.
Ex: Amy is so crazy about John, she wants to meet him every day.
6. (to) take something the wrong way = to take offense.
Ex: Don’t take this the wrong way, but I liked your hair better before you got it cut.
7. Cup of tea = the type of person or thing that one generally likes.
Ex: Football is not my cup of tea. I prefer baseball.
8. (to) drop by = to pay a short, often unannounced visit.
Ex: If we have time before the movie, let’s drop by Bill’s house.

VALENTINE'S DAY FOR THE SINGLES

Centuries ago, when the first societies had been found or earlier than that time, the human has begun to define one thing that every nation has a word to explain. In English, it is called “LOVE”.

Up to now, there are a lot of love stories. And the most favorite one is Valentine - a vicar who lived in Roman’s Empire.
King of Roman wanted to have a strong army. He thought that if a man lived without love, he would be more powerful. And he made a decree that no one in country can get married!. But Valentine didn’t think so. He understood love was one of the elements to make human’s life. Therefore, he organized a wedding party for a couple. The King was very angry and he killed the Vicar. That was 14th February.
Since that time, that day has become a day for lovers. Every year, millions of people show their loves to their boyfriends or girlfriends. On that day, they make a date, give presents and say sweet words.
But that is the story of lovers, how about the singles?

QUESTION:
1. Do you know this legend? Do you know any other stories that explain the origin of Valentine’s Day?
2. What makes you notice that the Valentine’s day is coming?
3. What are differences between Valentine’s day and other holidays in term of preparation and celebration?
4. How do you feel when valentine’s day is coming?
5. Do you have boyfriend or girlfriend?
6. If yes, what will you do to your boyfriend(s) or girlfriend(s) on valentine’s day?
(With or without “s”, it’s up to you)?
7. If no, what do you do on that holiday?
8. What is a sweetest thing you expect your (future) boyfriend/girlfriend will do for you on this valentine’s day?
9. Do you think money is needed for love? Why?
10. Many ones love two or more people at the same time, share us you idea(s)?

15 Ways To Celebrate Valentine's Day as A Single
It's Valentine's Day, and you're currently without a significant other. This small, but crucial, fact can mean the difference between enjoying this holiday, or ranking it as one of the year's low points (and hey, it's only February…). It's not enough that red, white, and pink roses are popping up everywhere and there are ONLY mushy cards in the card store, and all the commercials focus on just how incredibly diamond studded Valentine's Day could be - for you - IF you were in a romantic relationship. What's billed as the “most romantic night” of the year for couples can leave singles feeling a bit… odd and left out, to say the least.
What's a single person to do?

1) First, recognize that you're definitely not the only one. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that more than 80 million people will spend this holiday as a single.

2) Decide what your vision is for Valentine's Day. Is it a day you want to celebrate? Or would you prefer to treat it like just another day? If you choose the latter, then go through your normal routine for February 14, knowing that February 15 will arrive and life will be back to normal (at least until next year…).

3) If you choose to celebrate Valentine's Day consider making it a date night with yourself. Make or order your favorite meal, chill something wonderful to drink. Rent a favorite movie, or buy a new book - whatever makes you feel special and cherished. Make this night sacred time for you to think your thoughts and dream your dreams.

4) If you've been invited to a Valentine's Day party definitely considering going. There's a pretty good chance that you'll meet some other singles to spend time with. This is especially important if you belong to a church or social group which is hosting an event - this could be a high level attraction venue for you, as it will draw others with similar backgrounds or interests. Make sure you look and feel your best.

5) If you have several single friends, consider throwing your own Valentine's Day party. Have every invitee bring a guest - you're likely to meet new people and have fun doing so!

6) If throwing a party feels like too much work, consider getting a group together to go out for dinner and/or dancing. Try to go to a “fun” restaurant such as Planet Hollywood or Hard Rock Café - someplace that is too loud for intimate dinners.

7) Use this day to try (or buy) something new. Pick up a hobby or a craft, cook a new kind of cuisine, work on a home decorating or improvement project. Time will pass quickly while you're beautifying your surroundings.

8) Exercise today! This will clear your skin, tone your body, and keep the endorphins flowing. You'll also feel more relaxed and will sleep better.

9) If you like children, consider offering to watch your friends' kids while they go out to celebrate. You may have a great time baking cookies and building furniture forts and will earn your friends' gratitude in the process.
10) Spend Valentine's Day giving and sharing your talents with other people. Give of yourself on this day- maybe by volunteering or helping out - you'll find yourself tapping in to great joy.

11) Use the night to catch up on your overdue correspondence such as emails, letters, thank you cards. It's another way of reaching out and staying in touch. Plus it will be a relief to clear those off your “to-do” list.

12) Consider spending the evening listening to live music, or hanging out at a local coffee house or bookstore café. You can do your own thing but still be with other people.

13) Draw names and trade Valentines with your friends. They can be fun or silly but they are a great way to solidify your friendships.

14) Use the night to catch up on your sleep. Get ready for bed a bit earlier and wind down sooner. Americans are generally sleep deprived so catch up when you can!

15) Finally, remind yourself that by not spending Valentine's Day with just anyone, you're taking great care of YOU and preparing for a wonderful, life-long relationship!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Lateral Thinking

With logic, you start out with certain ingredients just as in playing chess you start out with given pieces. But what are those pieces? In most real life situations the pieces are not given, we just assume they are there. We assume certain perceptions, certain concepts and certain boundaries.
Lateral thinking is concerned not with playing with the existing pieces but with seeking to change those very pieces. Lateral thinking is concerned
with the perception part of thinking. This is where we organize the external world into the pieces we can then 'process'
There are some stories for your group to find out answer !
1. Betty signals to the headwaiter in a restaurant, and says, "There's a fly in my tea." The waiter says, "No problem, madam. I will bring you a fresh cup of tea." A few minutes later Betty shouts, "Get the manager! This is the same cup of tea!" How did she know?

2. Coming home from work, Simon had just put his key in the lock of his door when he heard his wife Betty scream, "Bill, don't kill me!" He dashes in to find Betty dead with a knife buried in her chest. Standing around the body are a postman, a doctor, and a lawyer. The husband immediately knows the postman killed his wife. How?

3. A horse is tied to a five meter rope in front of an old saloon. Six meters behind the horse is a bale of hay. Without breaking his rope, the horse is able to eat the hay whenever he chooses. How is this possible?
4. A man is lying dead in a field. Next to him there is an unopened package. There is no other creature in the field. How did he die?
5. A man rode into town on Friday. He stayed for three nights and then left on Friday. How come?
6. Deep in the forest was found the body of a man who was wearing only swimming trunks, snorkel and facemask. The nearest lake was 8 miles away and the sea was 100 miles away. How had he died?
7. What occurs once in June, once in July and twice in August?
8. A woman had two sons who were born on the same hour of the same day of the same year. But they were not twins. How could this be so?
9. There are six eggs in the basket. Six people each take one of the eggs. How can it be that one egg is left in the basket?

10. It was a dark stormy night and a couple were in a car racing madly through a foreign city. The car broke down and the husband had to go get help from someone who spoke his language. He was afraid to leave his wife alone in the car so he pulled up the windows and locked the car before leaving. When he came back, the car was in the same state as he had left it but his wife was dead, there was blood on the floor and there was a stranger in the car. What happened?

11. A police officer saw a truck driver clearly going the wrong way down a one-way street, but did not try to stop him. Why not?

Year 2007: The Remarkable Events in Vietnam

In the year 2007, Vietnam continues her strong and stable development in politics, economics and is recorded as one of the fastest growing economics in the world. Vietnam has gained many achievements from educations, culture, social development to external affair in politics. However, Vietnam also has to face with many obstacles in Climate change (increasing flooding level in Central, landslide), inflation and disease.
Here are the summary of some events (good and bad) which are believed to be significant in year 2007:

1) Economic growth, foreign investment, import and export turnover (doanh thu) are all highly increased.
Vietnam has gained her highest GDP (Gross Domestic Products) over recent year, GDP is estimated to reach number of 8.5 %, higher than 2006 which was 8.17%. Personal income is increased to 855 USD per person per year.
Export turnover is about 14 billion USD, increased 20.5% in comparison with last year. Total import turn-over is 59 billion USD.

2) Inflation increases tremendously, workers struggle with risen living cost.
This year, inflation is recorded as a tremendous increasing, estimated around 11%. Meanwhile salary is not much improved and poor people are facing with many difficulties in life as cost for living is risen day by day.

3) Vietnam to affirm (khẳng định) her position in United Nation and to be elected as a non-permanent member of UN Security Council
Vietnam as the country has just been elected by the 62nd General Assembly as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2008-2009 tenure (nhiệm kỳ) with a high level of trust of the international community.

4) Safety helmet: safety awareness and obedience of law
From December 15, 2007, all motorcyclists have to wear safety helmet when using motorcycle. The punishment for those who don’t conform to this law is very strict. Although there were many opinions before launching this law, it was amazing to see that 98% of people had worn safety helmet from 15 December. It is believed that wearing helmet will improve people awareness of road safety and then reduce number of accident.

5) Central of Vietnam: facing with continuing flooding and typhoons

This year is also an unlucky year for people who live in Central of Vietnam. A lot of people died, lost and injured by bad weather, even thousand of people were in hunger and homeless.

6) Cholera (dịch tả): a warning of Vietnam food safety and hygiene
The first cholera infected patient was found on 23rd October 2007 and after that, many cholera cases had been found over 13 provinces. “Mam tom” was strictly forbidden, and this banned issue is still one of the scandal of ministry of health. By the end of the year, there was announcement from Minister of Health declare that cholera had been in control and there was no more cholera patient.

7) Bridge collapse, : a warning of safety in Construction
Bridge collapsed in Can Tho province in September killed 54 people, injured 80 people and hundred of people lost their beloved husbands, fathers, and sons.
Recently, accident of Ban Ve hydroelectric power plant (công trình thủy điện), killed many engineers and technician.
These two accidents had drawn people pay attention to safety in major construction in Vietnam.

8) Sport: tears and smiles
2007 is also a remarkable landmark in history of Vietnam sport. In SEAGAMES, we were in the third rank over ten countries participated and we just lost the second position to Malaysia until the last minutes of SEAGAMES. In football, we have defeated many big teams to enter into quarter final of Asian Cup, as well as get into the second round for Olympic games. However, it was very disappointed to Vietnamese fan to see football team totally lost in Seagames.

Many other events happened in year 2007, and most of them contributed to the development of Vietnam economics and society. Vietnam is now looking forward to year 2008, and she will get a big improvement, a big success in the coming year.

Your Favourite Holiday Trip

In Vietnam, we have so many holidays a year : Tet holiday, New Year, National day, Labour Day, etc… One of the most popular way to enjoy the holiday for Vietnamese is travelling to scenetic places like Da Lat, Vung Tau.

If you don’t want to spend too much time for trip organization, you can buy a tour from agency. They have a wide range of services which can fit your time and budget. However, some youths who like adventure and freedom normally like to organize the tour themselves. Another kind of travel that is emerging now is open tour. This is the combination of above two types of travel. That means agency will book bus ticket and hotel for you. You will be independent to decide how long you stay there and when you will leave. There are many agencies like this scattering across Vietnam such as SINH Café,... And they have built a connection together and made a perfect tour chain for serving customers. This is one of most preferred tours for foreign tourist.
Nowadays, together with the increase of life standard, the tour services are getting more and more diversified. If we look back at our travelling 15 year ago, you can easily find out that travelling is simply going to some place , enjoy sight-seeing, food. Now, there are more services for you to enjoy when travelling: out door games (like climbing, sailing, driving canoes, …) or relaxing services (spa,..) or team-building activities which are customized for company.

Of course, each one has its own advantages and disadvantages. But in general, they all give you their own way to experience many interesting things during the trip with a lot of unforgettable memories. Please share with us your favourite holiday trip.

Questions:

1/ How many places have you travelled? Is there any abroad one?
2/ What kind of travel have you used ?
- a tour from agency?
- A tour organized by yourself?
- A open tour?
3/ What do you think of the advantages and disadvantages for each one that you have taken?
4/ Is there any trip that gave you the most unforgettable memory? If yes, tell us what it is?
- Where did you go?
- When?
- What made you like it most?
- Any sweet memory or accident? J
5/ Do you have any advices for people when travelling to make it an excellent trip?
- what we should prepare?
- What we should/should not do during the trip?
- Is there any advice for places that you should not miss during your trip?
- Is there any tour that you think they can offer good service?
6/ Tet is coming soon. Do you have any advice for us where to go?

A man with three wishes

A man is going in a desert, lonely. There is no other people. There is no tree. The weather is very hot. The water has been gone out. When he's nearly die, a genie appear suddenly and give him tree wishes. After thinking carefully, he say:
- First, I want to become a light man. Second, I want alot of water. And third, I want many women to be around me.
The genie say:
- Ok. I will make your wishes come true.
Immediately, the man is turned into a.... WC of woman

Who is smarter?

A woman and a man are involved in a car accident; it's a bad one. Both of their cars are totally demolished but amazingly neither of them are hurt. After they crawl out of their cars, the woman says:
"So you're a man, that's interesting. I'm a woman. Wow, just look at our cars! There's nothing left, but fortunately we are unhurt. This must be a sign from God that we should meet and be friends and live together in peace for the rest of our days."
Flattered, the man replied:
"Oh yes, I agree with you completely!" "This must be a sign from God!"
The woman continued:
"And look at this, here's another miracle. My car is completely demolished but this bottle of wine didn't break. Surely God wants us to drink this wine and celebrate our good fortune."
Then she hands the bottle to the man, The man nods his head in agreement, opens it and drinks half the bottle and then hands it back to the woman. The woman takes the bottle, immediately puts the cap back on, and hands it back to the man. The man asks:
"Aren't you having any?"
The woman replies:
"No. I think I'll just wait for the police...""
